| The complete history of this famous training ground, from the very beginning in 1562 to the present. Contains a lot of Marine and local military history. Also several statues are on Parris Island, including the famous Iron Mike, a memorial dedicated to the Parris Island trained Marines who sacrificed their lives during World War I, and another famous statue is the Iwo Jima Monument, which commemorates the heroic raising of the American flag on Mt. Surabachi in 1945. It was sculpted by Felix del Weldon, who used it as the prototype for the world famous monument in Washington DC. A new monument, "The Known Marine" was recently dedicated to the US Marine Drill Instructor, both past and future who served on Parris Island. |
