Chiggers, also know as red bugs,
live throughout the southern area and their range even goes far north.
Many a camper and hiker have become a chiggers feast. The chigger
is actually a near microscopic mite and is a relative of the spider
family. Only the "larva" attacks humans. Chiggers or red
bugs, live around pine straw, Spanish moss, tree bark, dead vegetation
and high grasses. The chigger is about 1/100th
of an inch in size and is chrome-orange in
color. |

About Chiggers and Red Bugs |
|
Magnified, the chigger resembles an oblong tick, but has a much wider mouth part. The "larva" chigger is the one that attacks humans and is characterized by having 6 legs. After feasting on tissue, the chigger larva becomes an adult with 8 legs and does not attack humans again. The adult female chigger lays her eggs on fallen leaves or under exposed tree roots in the autumn or spring months. These eggs hatch into "larva" in early spring and begin their search for tissue and repeating the cycle of life. |

This is a fully
engorged chigger with its mouth part extended. The mouth "tube"
is used to secrete saliva into the victims skin which digest the tissue.
Once the tissue is liquefied, the "tube" is used to suck
the fluids like a straw. One can see why scratching will only make
matters worse. The digested skin is already extremely tender... Plus
... scratching allows saliva
to spread to more tissue and to go deeper. This "larva" would soon become a mature adult. |

Ways to help
prevent and treat chigger attacks include:
1. Using spray repellants or sulphur powder on ankles, wrists, and waist areas. 2. Washing with strong soap when returning from an outing. 3. Get O/C treatment when outbreaks occur. Don't wait, it will only get worse. 4. If attacked, try not to scratch, it WILL become worse if you scratch. 5. A cool bath with will help somewhat lessen the itch until medicated. 6. Vaseline, calamine lotion and sunburn lotion often help reduce the pain. 7. An old standby is clear fingernail polish. Painful at first... but it sometimes works. |
