Hunting
Island State Park is one of South Carolina's best known and most popular
beach. Over three miles of sandy beach greet millions of visitor a year,
complete with showers and rest rooms. The 5,000 acre park has a camp
ground and small store on the North end of the beach, and cabins on
the South end, just for the folks that want to spend some serious time
at the beach. On the West side of the park, a marshwalk (boardwalk) extends well into the marshes making an ideal nature observation platform. Also there is a salt water lagoon for the folks who prefer the quieter joys of the beach. The lagoon is a very popular fishing spot for local fishermen who want to bank fish and is home to many sea birds, raccoon, and other wildlife. For the pier fishing crowd, a 1120 foot free standing pier is located to the very south most point on the Park. Here you can really enjoy some good fishing. At the pier entrance stands a nature hut, full of area nature samples and much information. In the center of the of the park, many nature spots and trails are waiting for the exploration crowd. Here you can really be close to nature. Hunting Island also has a lighthouse. Built in 1873, this lighthouse assisted ships in making a safe passage. It is open to the public, and if you're adventurous enough to climb the spiral stairs, you will get a magnificent view of the beach and surrounding marshes, from 132 feet up above the ground. Although not an Atlantic beat em up surf, it is a sand beach, and it is on the water, and it is public. It's a River beach, and it is very popular with the locals. Some swim & jet ski, while others just take in the sun. Also in the same area, is a boardwalk with an observation tower on which one can see many miles of marsh, waterways and all the nature within. The sunset and sunrise are very pretty here and can make for a very romantic or peaceful walk. |
