Beaufort
is a Mecca for the art world. Artist from all over the country come
to put on canvas the scenes of the Lowcountry. Beaufort has highly
gifted painters who reside here and their masterpieces can be found
throughout the many art gallery's in Beaufort County. Almost every
day one can drive downtown and see several artist sitting on the banks
of the Beaufort River, painting the magnificent beauty of the
bay and the surrounding giant moss laddened oaks. Painting is not
the only form of art in the Lowcountry. Basket weaving is very poplar,
a craft carried on from the slave days,
is still practiced in it's original form. Baskets are made from the palmetto tree and some use various grasses from the marsh. Often one can find crafts made out of Spanish moss and sea shells or sand dollars. On some days, one may walk down to the Waterfront Park and find all types of handcrafted creations for sale, some very unique. Another form of art in the Beaufort is music. Many songwriters and musicians live in Beaufort County, some very famous. On the Islands one can hear songs from the slave days, magnificent textures of harmonies, a style heard nowhere else but in this part of the south. |
