Beaufort Climate and Weather
Beaufort has a sub tropical weather pattern. The climate in general is breathtaking in the spring, hot and humid in the summer, fantastic in the fall and very mild in the winter. There is a rainy season, where thunder storms seen to happen during the late afternoons in late summer, usually lasting an hour or so, sometimes longer.

The Seasons and What to Expect

Beaufort colors April :copyright 1999, R.J. Sorensen

Spring : In April the colors are blazing around Beaufort, as the azaleas are in full bloom, along with everything else that blooms. The smells are sweet and powerful. You can walk the streets and swear you've seen more colors than a rainbow. Each year the flowers seem to be better than the last. The weather is pretty much fantastic with temperature hanging in the 60-80 range, lower humidity, and crystal blue skies are abundant. With weather like this, it's easy to understand why so many people end up retiring here.
Summer: In June it starts to get hot during the day, in the 80-90 range and the famous late afternoon popcorn thunderstorms start happening, becoming almost a daily event from July through September, (at least it seems like it ). But there are still plenty of  gorgeous days during that time. The nights are cooler, (70-90) and makes perfect walking weather. The sunsets can be very beautiful and colorful this time of year. sunset dock.jpg (24558 bytes)

EMS117 : Beaufort Thunderstorm Info

Thunderstorms around here come quickly and can be very violent. They appear on hot days, in the late afternoon, and can have deadly lightning strikes. If you are outside, seek shelter in a building or your car. Stay away from trees or water. The Beaufort area has had fatalities from these storms, not a lot, but if it's you, that's enough. Don't risk it.

Fall : The falls are like spring. There are hardly
any cold nights, maybe cool enough for a light windbreaker at night. The fall here lasts until January, as some people are still swimming at the beach and wearing short sleeve shirts around Christmas time. It's still perfect walking weather, and boating too. The shrimping season is in full cycle in November, so there are a lot of boats heading to the water. This picture was taken in early January.
Winter : Winter here is January and February, where the short sleeves get put away, and the heavy stuff comes out, even though there are a couple of chilly days in December. We are really talking cold now, about 40 - 60, but some nights do get into the 20-30's, although that's maybe 10 days out of the winter season.
It does seem colder though, because of the humidity being higher.
The biggest complaint about the area, is the humidity. Being on the water, it's going to be that way. You do get used to it, and after a couple of days, it doesn't seem so bad. Most of the time, there is a nice cool breeze coming off the Atlantic Ocean. It does feel good. Also, the thunderstorms really cool it down, you almost begin to want them.

EMS117 : Beaufort Dehydration Warning

High temperatures combined with high humidity can rapidly dehydrate the body. Make sure to drink a lot of water, always more than you think you need.
Dehydration can cause weakness and dizzy spells,
and can lead rapidly to heat exhaustion and heat stroke,
which can be fatal. Drink water, not beverages containing caffeine, as they actually dehydrate you more.

The only other complaint I've heard about, is with the gorgeous weather, it also brings out a nasty little insect know as the sand flea. This critter packs a mean bite, being you can hardly see them (also called "no-see-ums").
There are sprays and lotions available to keep them away.
Other than that, it's as close to paradise as you can get.
